I remember a big fight I had with my father (Abel Meeropol) about the
Nazi-Soviet Pact --- he kept repeating the line about the betrayal of
Czechoslovakia at Munich and the desire by the west that Hitler would
invade the SOviet Union --- and that Stalin's treaty with Hitler had
stopped that conspiracy in its tracks. So far so good --- I did not
dispute the right (even the need) of the Soviet Union to "buy time" with
the treaty.

HOWEVER --- what we never got past was that he hadn't any answer as to WHY
the US Communist Party immediately ended its anti-Nazi line and actually
began to criticize FDR when he moved to support Britain after the War began
--- (and of course, Pete Seeger rather defensively acknowledged -- years
later -- that his and the Almanac singers' attacks on Roosevelt the
warmonger until June 1941 was "wrong").

The slavish support for every twist and turn of Soviet policy was a big
reason why all the gains that the CP made in the US during the unionization
drives of the 1930s, (and other struggles) began to erode during the period
of the Nazi-Soviet Pact ---

(Is there any evidence that a promise by Stalin to rein in the anti-fascism
of the worlds' communist parties was contained within the secret protocols
of the Nazi-Soviet pact?)

And of course despite having those two years to prepare, the first reaction
from Moscow about the reports of the German invasion was refusal to believe
them ("and why isn't your message in code?"). --- Luckily, the invasion was
stopped just short of Moscow and despite being encircled, Leningrad
survived as well! (though with unbelievable suffering)
