Third-way thinking can't IMO be an alternative to the eternal muddle of
"liberalism" vs. "conservatism."  The left in this country has gone through
this illusion--now slinkily remarketed yet again as "good" populism--with
increasing frequency since the 1990s, always with catastrophic results.  It
goes back at least as far as the IMO unlamented but lamentable reactionary Ken
Kesey

Red-brown IMO is always and only brown in the long run--that is the point of
it.  The Third Way is a gimmick.

In the US, we don't go in for the bullshit quasi-medievalist "organicism" that
permeated eg the so-called "thought" of Mussolini and Gentile, nor do we have
much European-style overt ruling-class classism; instead we have what is
generally thought of as "a man's godgiven rights" (pronounced "rats") carried
to an astonishing extreme in the "marketplace of idears,"  where "a man goes
out" to sell his "ideas" and "folks" buy them.  This "classic liberalism" leads
very quickly to the worst form of illiberalism.

"I'll buy that!" is the cry--or "I ain't buying that."  There's always that
"third way" for discerning "mavericks" like Dore--a product for sale or a
marketing opportunity like any other.

When will we ever learn?
