Julian Assange and the Criminalisation of Journalism

*_Michael Clifford_*is an Irish author and investigative journalist
currently working as a special correspondent with /The Irish Examiner/.
He was awarded the title "Journalist of the Year" in 2016, having won
acclaim for his work in exposing the smear campaign against Irish police
whistleblower Maurice McCabe by senior members of the Garda Síochána. In
2014, TV3's Tonight with Vincent Browne named him "Journalist of the
Year" for his work on the McCabe story.
Michael Clifford has written four books; the non-fiction "Bertie Ahern
<https://peoplepill.com/people/bertie-ahern/> and the Drumcondra Mafia"
(2012, with Shane Coleman), "A Force for Justice: The Maurice McCabe
Story" (2018), and two crime novels; "Ghost Town" was published in 2012.
*_Tim Dawson_*is a British journalist and the author of several books.
He writes regularly for national newspapers and magazines and produces
audio visual packages for a variety of organisations. For twenty years,
he wrote weekly for The Sunday Times and was a section editor on that
paper for over a decade.
He also undertakes work as a photographer, trainer, speaker, conference
chair and facilitator, a PR, a copywriter, and an event and project
manager.

and 2018. _Early this year he observed the Extradition Hearing of Julian
Assange on behalf of the NUJ_. He currently convenes the International
Federation of Journalists

group on the surveillance of journalists. He regularly speaks at major
public events including recent meetings at the Palace of Westminster,
the European Parliament and the Trades Union Congress.
_Julian Assange – 9 Years Incarceration ___
Journalist and Publisher Julian Assange sought sanctuary from the global
militarists in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London in June 2012. He
remained there for 7 years. Julian’s life was at threat for his role as
publisher of the truth regards American war crimes in Iraq and
Afghanistan. Julian is a publisher and journalist and co founder of
WikiLeaks. It was on this platform that he and his team published war
crimes documents – Julian did nothing illegal as he alerted the US
government authorities prior to publication and the London Guardian had
already published much of the material. Unfortunately the USA organised
a regime change in Ecuador – The London Embassy staff was changed -
Julian was then in great danger. In April 2019, he was forcefully
removed from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London by the British police and
incarcerated in Belmarsh Maximum Security Prison in London where he was
placed in isolation for 22 hours per day until his fellow prisoners
demanded he be moved to the general prison area. They were successful
in their strong demands.
In January 2021 the magistrate at the Old Bailey Court in London ruled
against the extradition of Julian to the USA where he would have faced
175 years in prison – The Magistrate ruled on grounds of his mental
health. Needless to say, the USA has appealed the Magistrate’s
ruling. Thankfully now the US Government has been challenged seriously
about the Human Rights aspect of Julian’s case. There is a great
campaign for Julian’s freedom both in the UK and in Ireland as indeed
there is around the world.
