[Edited Message Follows] There can't be too much on this, The rot goes back before Reagan to the Nixon recession and the wave of antileft repression, particularly in universities, but across the board in society, that put forward a surprising range of phony entrepreneurs--the late Jim Atlas being one example--whose role was ultimately, to paraphrase Robert Lowell, to act as "dopes and screws" who "washed our mouths out with soap." (The fact that Atlas built his career in part on Lowell's patronage is another story.)
The highly successful Gnomon Copy that replaced a wonderful newstand in a beautiful Art Deco storefront in Harvard Square circa 1970 was notorious for its cynical youth exploitation labor practices. Jhn Kyper and Pete Glosser published an article on this in '72 in the now long-defunct The Real Paper.
