Police arrest 5 as unrest ensues after far-right MK`s visit to Jerusalem’s Old

Gilad Cohen - Y-net - Dozens gathered to protest Police Commissioner Yaakov
Shabtai`s decision to postpone a march from there to the Temple Mount for fear
it could spark violence between Jews and Palestinians in the city. NEXT VIDEO

Old City (Photo: Yoav Dudkevitch) Religious Zionist party Extreme Right Knesset
Member, accompanied by several followers, arrived at the Damascus Gate of
Jerusalem` Old City, where he expresses anger at the police for having
"capitulated to Hamas" and cancelled the "March of the Flags", in which
thousands of settler youths were poised today to march provocatively through
the Muslim Quarter, waving Israeli national flags and singing inflamttory
racist songs. After Ben-Gvir left the area, unrest erupted as the right wing
Israelis with their flags clashed with local youths flying Palestinian flags.
Police officers used riot control measures, including several stun grenades.
The issue of the Dance of the Flags had not been resolved but simply put off to
next Tuesday - by which time the new Bennet-Lapid Cabinet will have been sworn
in, and will have to pick up this hot potato on its very first day in power.

Naftali Bennett: Israel’s far-right prime minister in waiting
<https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jun/03/naftali-bennett-israel-far-right-palestinians>

Oliver Holmes - The Guardian - Naftali Bennett does not believe in a solution
to the Israeli-Palestinian crisis. His aim instead is to “manage” it in
perpetuity and always from a position of ultimate Israeli control over
Palestinians. The hardline religious nationalist, once the head of a prominent
Jewish settler group and now expected to become Israel’s next prime minister,
is open about his plans for millions living under occupation. A video posted on
his official YouTube page presents a colourfully animated account of the
far-right politician’s plan, with a lighthearted tone that belies its deeply
serious message. “There are some things that we all know will never happen,”
says a narrator in a carefree voice. “The Sopranos will never return for
another season … And a peace agreement with the Palestinians will not happen.”

Don’t expect Netanyahu’s departure to alter the course of politics in Israel
Daniella Peled - the Guardian / Institute for War and Peace Reporting - It
would be encouraging to think that the massive upheaval afoot in Israeli
politics with the unseating of Benjamin Netanyahu also signals a seismic shift
in political culture. Perhaps a turning point in its democratic decline, even a
move towards ending its rule over millions of Palestinians. Unfortunately, it
signals none of these things. The burning desire to depose Israel’s longest
serving leader is certainly the driving force behind the disparate eight-party
coalition that hopes to replace him. But there is another factor: the consensus
that in determining the future of the Jewish state, the conflict with the
Palestinians can be managed in perpetuity. Netanyahu, more than any other
Israeli leader, has promoted this idea, cementing it so fast within the
national consciousness that it may be his most enduring legacy. It is a sign of
how invisible the Palestinians now are in Israeli politics that even the truly
historic inclusion of an Arab party in the coalition has not introduced them on
to the agenda. Islamist party Ra’am is using its four seats to extract some
narrow gains for its own constituency but, like all the other partners, has
agreed not to become entangled in the whole Palestinian issue for the purposes
of avoiding friction. For a long time, the decades-long occupation of the West
Bank and Gaza Strip did play a central role in Israeli politics and in a
national debate over the direction of the Zionist project. Even after the
failure of the Oslo accords, successive prime ministers at least stayed
theoretically loyal to the idea of implementing a two-state solution. Netanyahu
did something different. He sold Israelis the idea that the occupation of
millions of unwilling Palestinians could be managed as an inconvenience rather
than an existential threat. [ak]

Israel calls on Egypt to stop entry of construction materials to Gaza
<https://www.ynetnews.com/article/S1ciu001s00>
Y-Net - Israel has reportedly asked Egypt to halt the entry of cement and other
construction materials into the Gaza Strip over fears they could be used by
Palestinian armed groups for military purposes. goods have been flowing through
the Salah-a-Din gate of the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt three
days a week without any monitoring, the Kan public broadcaster reported
Wednesday. Among the goods reportedly entering Gaza through the crossing were
cement, building supplies and fuel. Israeli officials are hoping to meet with
their Egyptian counterparts to discuss the issue, having recognized that
without monitoring, there is no way to block Hamas from rebuilding its military
capabilities. After previous rounds of fighting, such as in 2014, Israel
succeeded in imposing cumbersome controls on the entry of building materials
into Gaza, holding up for years the reconstruction of destroyed homes. However,
in the 2021 round of fighting, Egyptian President Sisi announced his intention
to grant contracts worth no less than Five hundred million Dollars to Egyptian
building contractors who would rebuild Gaza. With profits on that order at
stake, Egyptian mega- contractors can hardly be expected to let themselves be
dependent on a thin trickle of building materials entring Gaza in accordance
with Israeli security considerations. [ak]

Three Palestinians killed by Israeli soldiers during Jenin incursion
<http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=83322>
IMEMC/Times of Israel - Israeli undercover agents penetrated into Jenin with
the intention of detaining two Palestinians defined as "terror suspects",
members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. There was an armed confrontation and
the Israelis, dressed in civilian clothes, shot and killed one of the
"suspects". The incident occurred near a base of the Palestinian Authority`s
security forces. Officers stationed at the building intervened, shooting at the
Israelis but not hitting them - whereupon the Israelis shot and killed two
Palestinian officers. The official Israeli communique blamed this result on "
miscommunications" - i.e. usually Israeli troops coordinate their entry into
Palestinian cities with PA security forces, in order "to allow the latter to
draw back and avoid confrontation", but this was not done in this case. In the
Palestinian accounts, the Israeli forces were described as extra- judicially
assassinating all three Palestinians, without referring to the Israeli
distinction between "terrorist suspects" and Palestinians security officers
killed by mistake. Conversely, some Israeli sources described all the three
killed Palestinians as "terrorists". [ak]

`King Bibi` Wasn`t the Only Big Myth Shattered in Israel This Week
<https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/.premium.HIGHLIGHT-king-bibi-wasn-t-the-only-big-myth-shattered-in-israel-this-week-1.9871622>

Anshel Pfeffer - Haaretz - Diplomatic protocol dictates that you don’t rush to
congratulate the leaders of another country on coming to power before you’re
certain that it’s actually happening. So foreign leaders are not going to be
getting in touch with Naftali Bennett to wish him success as Israel’s new prime
minister until he is actually sworn in. They are fully aware, and if not will,
have been informed by their diplomats stationed here, that it’s far from being
a done deal. Benjamin Netanyahu will be fighting every inch of the way until
the new government wins its confidence vote to pick off wavering Knesset
members and deny Bennett his majority. Those leaders will wait until Bennett
actually has his feet under the prime minister’s desk. So it was interesting to
see that one major organization that is certainly well-versed in the vagaries
of Israeli politics didn’t wait. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee
had a press release up and ready to go just four and a half hours after the
parties had signed the coalition agreement on Wednesday night, congratulating
"Yair Lapid and Naftali Bennett for assembling a broad and diverse
coalition."(rh)

Shin Bet chief warns of violence as Netanyahu faces unseating

Reuters - Ynetnews - Shin Bet domestic security service Director Nadav Argaman

politically charged periods in decades, with the country on the verge of
unseating Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, its longest-serving leader.(rh)

‘Laughable, naive’: Palestinian party’s move to join Israel gov’t : Palestinian
activists say decision by the leader of the United Arab List party displays a
‘fundamental misunderstanding’ of Israeli politics.
<https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/6/5/dangerous-palestinians-on-mansour-abbas-joining-israeli-govt>

Arwa Ibrahim - Aljazeera - The United Arab List (UAL) is set to become the
first party of Palestinian citizens of Israel to take part in a governing
coalition after it agreed to join the new Israeli government to be led by
Naftali Bennett – a former ally of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – who had
called for the annexation of the occupied West Bank. Mansour Abbas, leader of
the UAL, set aside his differences with Bennett, the 49-year-old former head of
a settler organisation, and centrist leader Yair Lapid to sign up to a
coalition of eight parties from across the political spectrum aimed at ending
Netanyahu’s 12 years in power. (rh)

Palestinians see little difference in old and new Israeli leaders
<https://www.ynetnews.com/article/ryezyjUqd>

Reuters - Ynetnews - Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza on Thursday mostly
dismissed a change in Israeli government, saying the nationalist leader due to
replace Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would likely pursue the same
right-wing agenda.(rh)
