Yes, more specifically what is now known as the High Plains were identified by 
Long as the Great American Desert.

We had similar replicas in our offices.

He wasn't aware of the Ogallala Aquifer. Here's what it faces today What is the

The High Plains region needs to end industrial cattle raising/slaughter for a 
less resource intensive more sustainable model and return to dryland farming. 
Doable but unlikely w/o overturning the corporate Ag model and our current 
economic system which is driven by its nature to wreak havoc on nature.
