Those tax-exempt funds bought and managed land for Jews only, planted trees to replace Palestinian villages, and quietly acquired territory for illegal Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank. However, years of work by groups who support Palestinian rights and justice is slowly beginning to pay off. In April, the Jewish National Fund of Canada announced it was distancing itself from JNF-Keren Kayemeth LeYisrael, its affiliate in Israel. JNF Canada will no longer reference KKL in its name and is now an entirely different entity. The decision came after the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) informed JNF Canada it could no longer legally associate with the JNF in Israel because of the organization’s insistence on building in the West Bank, in violation of international law. In a recent letter to the JNF Canada leadership, both the president and CEO made a point of stating that any policies of JNF Kayemeth LeYisrael are not necessarily supported by or should be attributed to JNF Canada. Corey Balsam, national coordinator of Independent Jewish Voices Canada (IJV), says JNF Canada’s announcement is a partial victory. He explained that the timing of JNF Canada’s decision is related to the JNF-KKL announcement that they will be openly working in the Occupied Territories.
