Missing from the reviewer's list is the work of historian-biographer
Stephen B. Oates who wrote a book about the Turner rebellion and engaged in
a debate with Styron himself --- (I think in the pages of the Nation) ---
where Oates demonstrated that Turner's birth certificate actually existed
whereas Styron was skeptical about its existence ---

I wonder if the author ignored Oates' work --- which though written
originally in the 1960s was re-issued in paperback form in 1990 ---

(Think the title is THE FIERY TRIAL ??)
