Alessandro Russo talks of the "egalitarian politics" of Mao. But I think Mao
was a bureaucrat, even if a somewhat unusual one.

There was a personality cult, whereby Mao was treated as infallible by his
followers. This prevented a free and democratic discussion of the way forward
for China. Mao's attempts to force the pace of change led at times to
disastrous results.

Subject: Re: [marxmail] Chinese Communist Party: a party of workers or
capitalists? – Michael Roberts Blog

This was linked in Chris Gilbert's latest article about Venezuela at
Counterpunch, but it is definitely worth reading on its own. Not only for
futher insight of the China-Soviet split, and the Cultural Revolution, but more
importantly Mao's fears about the defeat of socialism, and the restoration of
capitalism to China, which I was completely unaware of.
