“Balancing the tragic aspects of the country’s origins against the triumphant is a tricky business” Annette Gordon-Reed writes in her 2017 review of Robert Parkinson’s The Common Cause: Creating Race and Nation in the American Revolution, which argues that patriotic leaders helped foment racial prejudice as the principal means of creating unity across the thirteen colonies in order to prepare Americans to do battle with Great Britain.
