I agree with Richard Smith 100% and I put the same argument at some places or to some friends, not sure about marxmail. Richard said everything in that comment, including that part with Hitler Germany and fascism and China, all as I think but cannot say it so eloquently.
Lovers of so-called socialism in the Soviet Union, under Stalin or after him, so-called socialism in China, Vietnam, Cuba, Venezuela, so-called Marxists or socialists, forgot the most important thing about socialism, to quote Richard" “ The essence of socialism is workers’ democracy, mass popular democracy on the model of the Paris Commune. Same with the rest.” Socialism is all about workers’ democracy, mass popular democracy, freedom of people to also have control of the economy as political life. If that could be done having the private property of means of production, that will be also socialism but obviously, private property means private control, no public control. Public control means democracy. Where is no democracy, where workers do not have the right in making decisions, not that some parties do that in the name of workers, that is not socialism. As we all know the different name for socialism is the dictatorship of the ploretariat and as Engels said: Look at the Paris Commune. That was the Dictatorship of the Proletariat."
