MANY consider that “reform and opening up” was a total transformation
of Chinese economics and politics and a negation of the first three
decades of socialist construction.
Nobody would gainsay China's desperate attempt to attract foreign
capital. I have defended Cuba's opening up of a class-divided and
exploitative tourist industry myself. However, I have no idea what this
has to do with socialism. There are 100 billionaires in China's
parliament, something that would have Karl Marx spinning in his grave at
such a rapid rate that a transformer attached to his toe could satisfy
Cleveland's electrical power for a year.
