The March on Washington was huge — quite possibly over 100,000, in my estimation. But 400,000 appears to be an exaggeration. The crowd was pretty much confined to Freedom Plaza and the bordering streets, while it remained sparse on the side streets. I doubt that that limited area could accommodate many more than 100,000, unless they were packed much tighter. It has to be acknowledged, however, that there was a turnover among the participants; by mid-afternoon large crowds had begun to leave the rally, just as smaller groups were still arriving.
Similarly, the size of the march on Nov. 4, which the PSL & ANSWER claimed was 300,000, was also greatly exaggerated. Both marches appeared to be about the same size, more or less. Nobody that I spoke to thought that Jan. 13 was a full 100,000 larger than the one on Nov. 4, while some thought it was smaller.
