let's all dust off our BARAN and SWEEZY ---(Monopoly Capital --- showing my age, right?) --- especially the chapter MILITARISM and IMPERIALISM.
They argue that the ONLY really good way to push the "wolf" of stagnation from the door in the age of Monopoly Capitalism is to prepare for war or (BETTER -- see WW II's economic impact on the US) fight a war --- preferably on others' territory. They also said this was a self-limiting project but MAYBE it is possible for there to be cycles --- long periods of "peace" where the stagnation forces build up and then accelerations of war preparation and "small" wars to jolt the economy back on track. The European is recommending that the EU follow the Baran-Sweezy playbook. And Trump will raise military spending, he just won't help Europe (as much) .... THE ARTICLE, of course, is total bullshit --- but they use such ridiculous arguments all the time to justify high military spending ...
