An interesting article on the parallels between Vietnam and Gaza, but I found the following grated:
"The Vietnamese constantly reiterated that they were not fighting the American people, whom they counted as allies, only the US government that occupied their country. Hamas makes no such distinction, and on October 7 sought to slaughter as many Israelis as it could." This seems to be one of those obligatory "we have to make sure we condemn Hamas too" statements some people make. Of course there were civilian deaths and they are wrong. But we know that some of them (we'll probably never know how many*) were inflicted by the IDF. Hamas seems to have planned attacks on military targets (which has not always been the case in the past) but in the chaos of the day the 'plan didn't survive contact with the enemy'. As it is, the ratio of security forces to civilians on Oct 7th was much higher than has been the case in the Israeli retaliation, or indeed, the Palestinian death toll over the years, which has been overwhelmingly civilian. I don't think we are obliged to include a "Hamas bad" caveat on everything we say. Comradely, John *I've heard claims that most were but in the absence of evidence I don't believe that. _._,_ > -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
