The New U.S. Labor Movement An update on the resurgence of labor in the United States

David Walters, one of the moderators of marxmail and a long time union activist and socialist, will moderate. Bill Fletcher Jr. Bill Fletcher Jr has been an activist since he was a teenager. Upon graduating from college he went to work as a welder in a shipyard, thereby entering the labor movement. Over the years he has been active in workplace and community struggles as well as electoral campaigns. He has worked for several labor unions in addition to serving as a senior staff person in the national AFL-CIO. Fletcher is the former president of TransAfrica Forum; a Senior Scholar with the Institute for Policy Studies; and in the leadership of several other projects. Fletcher is the co-author (with Peter Agard) of “The Indispensable Ally: Black Workers and the Formation of the Congress of Industrial Organizations, 1934-1941”; the co-author (with Dr. Fernando Gapasin) of “Solidarity Divided: The crisis in organized labor and a new path toward social justice“; and the author of “‘They’re Bankrupting Us’ – And Twenty other myths about unions.” Fletcher is a syndicated columnist and a regular media commentator on television, radio and the Web. Dan La Botz In the 1970s Dan La Botz was a truck driver and a founding member of Teamsters for a Democratic Union. He is the author of books and many articles on the American labor movement including, Rank and File Rebellion: Teamsters for a Democratic Union. (New York, Verso Books, 1990); A Troublemakers' Handbook: How to Fight Back Where You Work and Win! (Detroit, Labor Notes, 1991) and Cesar Chavez and La Causa (New York, Pearson Longman, 2006). He has also written several books on the Mexican labor movement. He is currently a member of the National Writers Union. He last taught at the School of Urban and Labor Studies at the City University of New York but is now retired from teaching.
