Though the pro-Gantz Democrats and pro-Netanyahu Republicans equally support
Israel’s war aims in the Middle East and its brutal oppression of the
Palestinians, the Republicans have jumped on the recent mild and belated
criticism of the genocidal campaign in Gaza by Chuck Schumer and Biden
administration officials as a wedge issue to peel Jewish voters and donors away
from the Democrats. Coupled with likely defections from Democrats to the left
of the party establishment, the Palestine issue could well tip the balance in
November’s presidential and congressional elections. The pro-Republican bias
was evident at last week’s AIPAC convention and in the coverage by the
Jewish-American media of the manufactured frenzy by Republican leaders at
Schumer’s criticism of Netanyahu, portrayed as an abandonment of Israel.
