Just read the article -- I know and respect Ellen Schrecker but I think she emphasizes the PARTISAN nature of "McCarthyism" too much --- YES, Republicans wanted to tar the New Deal with the communist brush but liberal democrats were ini the FOREFRONT of the anti-communist fights. When the Taft Hartley Act was passed in 1947 (over Truman's veto) the officials of the AFL and CIO cooperated by expelling Unions who refused to force their officers to sign non-communist affidavits. What I think is hopeful about today is the Democrats (even the corporate Democrats) see the necessity of having a united front with the progressives in the Democratic Party and outside of the Democratic Party against the Trumpists --- hopefully that will make the resistance to Trumpism stronger.
