Support for Israel's War on Gaza Plummeting Among Key Biden Voters: Poll "Given these numbers," said one progressive campaigner, "I don't know how President Biden can reconcile his stalwart support for Israel with the clear preference that his core constituents have for an end to this war." by Jake Johnson, Common Dreams, March 27, 2024 https://www.commondreams.org/news/gallup-poll-us-support-israel . . . Just 18% of Democratic voters currently approve of "the military action Israel has taken in Gaza" and 75% disapprove, according to the new poll, which was conducted between March 1-20. In November, 36% of Democratic respondents expressed approval of Israel's war and 63% disapproved.
"The crosstabs are even more striking—nearly two-thirds of people under 54, people of color, and women disapprove of the military action in Gaza," Sam Rosenthal, political director of the progressive advocacy group RootsAction, told Common Dreams in response to the new poll. "That is effectively the Democratic Party's base." . . . Overall, Gallup found that 55% of the American public—including 60% of Independents and 30% of Republicans—disapproves of Israel's military campaign in the Gaza Strip, up from 45% in November. Just 36% of the U.S. public approves, down from 50% four months ago. . . . The Biden administration has backed Israel's assault from the beginning, providing the Netanyahu government with billions of dollars worth of weapons <https://www.commondreams.org/news/biden-weapons-sales-israel> and diplomatic cover <https://www.commondreams.org/news/us-vetoes-cease-fire> despite widespread and growing protests at home and abroad. Gallup's survey found that 74% of U.S. adults say they are following developments in Gaza "closely." . . . *Democratic Insider Rips 'Shocking' US Claim That Israel Is Following International Law* *"There is no time to spare in pulling back from this outrageous assertion by the State Department," said Center for American Progress president Patrick Gaspard.* by Jake Johnson, Common Dreams, March 27, 2024 https://www.commondreams.org/news/patrick-gaspard-biden-state-department A longtime Democratic operative and current president of the Center for American Progress issued a scathing statement <https://www.americanprogress.org/press/statement-assertion-that-netanyahu-is-complying-with-international-law-in-gaza-is-a-gross-disregard-of-overwhelming-evidence-says-caps-patrick-gaspard/> Tuesday criticizing the Biden administration for accepting the Israeli government's claim that it is adhering to international law with its catastrophic military assault on the Gaza <https://www.commondreams.org/tag/gaza> Strip. "The State Department's shocking assertion that the Netanyahu government is complying with international law in Gaza is a gross disregard of overwhelming evidence and a dangerous precedent in the conduct of U.S. foreign policy," said Patrick Gaspard, who previously served as executive director of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and U.S. ambassador to South Africa under the Obama administration. "The stakes here are so high that the administration must be transparent and accountable in sharing with the American people all evidence that has led to this determination and the continued sale of offensive weapons to Israel," Gaspard argued, pointing to Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant's stated goal <https://www.commondreams.org/news/israel-blockade-gaza> of imposing a "complete siege" on Gaza at the start of the assault, which is now in its sixth month with no end in sight. Gaspard said that "every aspect" of Gallant's "edict" has "been on open display to the world," with famine, dehydration, and disease spreading across the enclave as Israel persists in obstructing the delivery of humanitarian aid <https://www.commondreams.org/news/oxfam-israel-aid>. The CAP president's statement came after U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told <https://www.commondreams.org/news/israel-international-law> reporters earlier this week that the Biden administration has not found Israel "to be in violation of international humanitarian law, either when it comes to the conduct of the war or when it comes to the provision of humanitarian assistance." . . . -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
