There are two ways Settler Colonies can go --- One is the French Army of Resistance to Algerian independence which involved at least one almost successful effort to assassinate DeGaulle. Most of them (Pieds Noirs) left Algeria after independence. But there is also the decision of the South African whites to accommodate democracy as long as capitalism was preserved --- with the South African Communist Party a main support for that compromise ----
I have to say, the willingness of South African blacks to "forgive but remember" as evidenced by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is almost breath-taking --- Is that guy in prison Barghouti capable of presenting a healing position? Is there a Jewish Israeli who would be willing to play the role of F.W. DeKlerk (who I think DID deserve the Nobel Peace Prize) ---??? One big difference --- the demise of the Soviet Union made the desire on the part of right wingers in "the west" to support South Africa disappear --- they were totally isolated. Only the cutting off of the US lifeline to Netanyahu would do the same today ...
