Chris: I appreciate the attempt to get beyond a simple reductionism. However
this book (as judged by the synopsis provided at any rate, I have not yet read
the book) does not in my view provide this. It does not seem to give an
adequate view of either the relations of Pieck and Ulbricht to JVS; nor the
role of Beria in any of this.
For another view, this is something I wrote some years back taking account of
some findings then newly published by the Cold War History Project. I have not
had time to update it.
