"As to Hamas and its actions in the Occupied Territories, I know that the
organization is one of the only ones expressing resistance.... Yet for any
secular intellectual to make a devil's pact with a religious movement is, I
think, to substitute convenience for principle. It is simply the other side of
the pact we made during the past several decades with dictatorship and
nationalism, for example, supporting Saddam Hussein when he went to war
with"the Persians."

" He [Arafat] never really reined in Hamas and Islamic Jihad, which suited
Israel perfectly so that it would have a ready-made excuse to use the so-called
martyrs' (mindless) suicide bombings to further diminish and punish the whole
people. If there is one thing that has done us more harm as a cause than
Arafat's ruinous regime, it is this calamitous policy of killing Israeli
civilians, which further proves to the world that we are indeed terrorists and
an immoral movement. For what gain, no one has been able to say. (From Oslo to
Iraq and the Road Map, p. 185.)"

" They don’t have a message about the future"

My humble thoughts about Hamas, which I have been following since its
foundation.

Hamas has been a disaster for Palestinians and their struggle for their
liberation from occupation.
No wonder he was supported by Israel from the very beginning.
All those Islamist movements whose primary goal is the creation of an Islamic
state do not need any support from the left.
Islam has no solution for contemporary problems and causes great damage in
societies where it has become the leading political option.
"They don’t have a message about the future"
Leftists, especially those who consider themselves Marxists, should remember
what happened to the Marxists in Iran, where they initially supported the
Iranian Islamic revolution.

The Iranian Revolution and the Crisis in the Left: A Pathway to a New
Understanding of Dialectics in Marxism - IMHO Journal (

 )

"If you consider the pro-Islamic fundamentalist anti-imperialism from a
reactionary pre-capitalist standpoint (which was a historical element of the
Asiatic mode of production), the lack of understanding of the dialectical
relationship of appearance to essence, for example in respect to human
liberation and freedom which should have been the ultimate goal of the
revolutionary movement was set aside for the mere appearance of
anti-imperialist action on the part of the pro-Islamic movement."

I apologise for my editing after posting my comment.
