That may be true but it doesn't mean that there is not real danger ahead from
an insurgent US right wing. The dismantling of the so-called "administrative
state" will target environmental, equity gains, and other concessions that have
been won over the past 70 years. There will be a resurgence of paramilitaries
calling themselves "militias" and a far more aggressive posture towards labor
and social movements. The rollback of rights will no doubt accelerate.
In the long run, it's a fight that cannot be avoided. But in the short run, the
track record of the US left over the past half-century gives us no reason for
confidence. We're like the US soccer team facing international football
competition. We get out-played with our impractical, incomprehensible demands,
street drama, and confrontation with cops and right-wing protesters rather than
mobilizing large numbers against the political administration. We lack
organization, program, and unity for the fight. Backing Democrats as a tactic
or strategy, however, is a guarantee that US right will continue to grow
stronger while we continue to lack the organization, program and independence
to win against them.
