Thanks Hari for this beautiful review. 
I saw this mise en scene of the Threepenny Opera in Rome a couple of years ago and it was actually impressive.

Thanks for that, Hari. For me, your review was edifying as well as beautifully written.  I always thought of Three Penny Opera and Mahagonny as emblematic of the Weimar Republic where German capitalism moved from crisis to crisis, and German society was conflicted between powerful forces of revolution and reaction.  I thought the characters and story of both served as metaphors for the degradation of capitalist society.

Decades ago, I had an English-language recording of Mahagonny, which was a favorite of mine that somehow did not make it through all my moves across the US.  I'd love to at least find the English-language libretto of that work since it's so relevant today where we know that "there's more gold to be found in men's pockets than buried in the ground."  Or something like that.  I don't have it anymore.
