John Shannon Saul (May 4, 1938 – September 23, 2023) was a Canadian
political economist and activist. His work focused on the liberation
struggles of southern Africa from the 1960s to the 2020s.
  . . .
Saul was professor emeritus of politics at York University in Toronto.[2]
He also taught at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania,[2] alongside
activist-academics such as Giovanni Arrighi (with whom he wrote Essays on
the Political Economy of Africa) and Walter Rodney; at the University of
Eduardo Mondlane in Maputo, Mozambique,[2] alongside activist-academics
such as Ruth First; and at the University of the Witwatersrand,
Johannesburg in South Africa.
  . . .
Saul was a socialist, and was considered to be an activist-academic in the
broader Marxist tradition. ...
  . . .
The well-known author ... Colin Leys adds: "John Saul's reflections on the
struggles for liberation to which he had devoted a lifetime of scholarship
and activism...the wise lessons he draws, and his resolute refusal to be
pessimistic in spite of all setbacks...should be not just read but taken to
heart by everyone who cares about the future of Africa and the world."[4]

*The Next Liberation Struggle: Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy in
Southern Africa*
by John S. Saul, Monthly Review Press, October 2005

"John Saul’s book is as much the fruit of many decades of struggle and
commitment to the cause of the working class in Africa as it is of careful
scholarly research. Both as a scholar and an activist he has taught and
inspired many revolutionaries, myself included, and has been part of bold
practical efforts to go beyond capitalism."
—Trevor Ngwane, chair, Anti-Privatization Forum, South Africa

"John Saul writes political science ‘from below’ most rigorously. His work
stands in the international literature as among the most widely-cited
analyses of Southern African politics and this book is another extremely
important contribution."
—Patrick Bond, University of KwaZulu-Natal Centre for Civil Society, Durban

in southern Africa from the 60s to the 90s and what I’ll call “apartheid
wars” because of apartheid South Africa’s involvement: Angola, Mozambique,
Namibia, Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, and anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa
itself. I’m looking for an introductory book that covers all of these, but
it’s a big topic so not sure such a book exists. But all of these wars seem
to be highly interconnected so I’m interested in learning about the common
threads. Thanks.
