Roberts: "Chávez reasserted state control over the state oil company." That is,
state ownership does not equal state control. It's a plain truth, isn't it? But
the PRC apologists and the obfuscators like Marv shove it into the dark when
the lamp turns to look at state-owned corporations in China.
---and---
Roberts: "No country has a larger public external debt as a share of GDP or of
exports or faces higher debt service as a share of exports." His article avoids
mentioning the major buyer of Venezuelan petroleum: China. Sixty years ago the
Soviet Union bought Cuban sugar on fraternal terms between two socialist
countries, but the PRC has dealt with Venezuela on a basically commercial
basis. "Venezuela's debt dates to 2007, the era of then-President Hugo Chavez,
when the country borrowed more than $50 billion from Beijing under loan-for-oil
deals." (Reuters, Aug. 26, 2022) So much for solidarity of the "Global South,"
for a "global community of shared future," yadda yadda.
