Fifteen years after his death, Stephen Jay Gould’s ideas have never been
more vital.



Why hasn’t the *Times* reported these more recent findings? The answer also
helps explain why they and other outlets so enthusiastically reported the
criticism against Gould in the first place. As he would have recognized,
it’s politics.



The call for “permanent vigilance and action” under the rubric of “tough
hope” in response to the work of reactionary extremists who reject
modernity was Gould’s final theme as a public intellectual. With the Left
