In this election year, there have been a lot of parallels with 1968.  This is 
another one. Harris is in the same spot as Humphrey was. Of course, he nearly 
won that election.
 
The fault, of course, does not need to be straddled forever only until election 
day. Harris is trying to do that by appearing more "sympathetic" to the 
suffering of Gaza. She is hoping that is enough to get through the election. 
 
But any new provocation or any new escalation into Lebanon or elsewhere means 
all bets are off.
