Marv: At our ages, we likely saw the CND at its highest points. But perhaps - that was so high precisely because it was at a time of the highest publicity of the so-called Cold War. Rhetoric was high. And, also at that time, there was still a high tide of support for what people saw as 'socialism' or 'communism' in the USSR. At least there was in the UK. The demagogy had not quite obliterated a real memory of whose army had swayed the scales in WW2 against fascism. And finally - the searing memory and sights of Hiroshima-Nagasaki were only too real still.
I think now it is still very quiet, but knowledge as to the level of new nuclear capability there is - is low. Although in Australia as the "Labor" government puts in AUKUS and sites up in the North-West Territories, perhaps that is more appreciated by people. Labor got kicked up up there recently. I think in Oz there likely is more appreciation of this. Whether that gets kick-started more, others here on the list could say better. I am not using myself as a yardstick, but I do try to keep up.
