Housing Instability and Children’s Health and Education
Aashna Lal, Natalie Slopen:
Abstract:
"The United States is facing an ongoing housing crisis, with approximately 50%
of renters spending more than 30% of their income on housing costs.1 A recent
study has found that 1 in 6 US children experienced unstable housing in 2022,
with children of color disproportionately affected.2 A significant body of
research connects housing instability—defined through a number of
characteristics, such as eviction, homelessness, and housing cost burden—to
adverse health outcomes, including increased mortality and worse physical and
mental health.3 Using data from the 2022 National Survey on Children’s Health
(NSCH), a nationally representative surveillance study administered annually to
US families, we present new evidence supporting the association between housing
instability and adverse outcomes in children. Building on previous work on this
subject, our data exemplify the need for housing to be a top priority in the
upcoming presidential election."
