In the absence of a strong labor movement pushing for independent candidates opposed to the bourgeois parties, I see nothing unprincipled about supporting social-democratic types who run as independents, whether it be the presidential campaigns of Nader in 2000 or La Follete on the Progressive Party ticket of 1924 *supported by the SP, many unions, and I believe the pre Stalinist CPUSA).. under these conditions, if it's "the only game in town", we have to play it to have any credibility.
Knowing that Nader was not a Marxist but a lifelong New Deal Democrat who felt abandoned by the neo liberal takeover of the party, I campaigned hard for him in 2000 (and his VP running mate, former SWP Presidential candidate of 1976 Peter Camejo). Their strong stand against "the corporate duopoly" won over many young people just then becoming political. The ruling class was nervous at the prospect of a left alternative and were able to frighten the liberal Nader supporters with the false claim that he "put W Bush into the WH." There has been no similar left opposition to the Democrats since (discounting the joke of the "socialist" Sanders.) Should a similar movement arise if Harris wins and her former supporters are quickly sickened by her continuing the neoliberal policies of Genocide Joe Biden, Obama, and the Clintons, in the short run it could lead to a Republican win in 2028 but a dissolution of the Democrats and a vacuum that the left would seek to fill. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
