Perhaps the most famous product of slavery in New York was Isabella
Baumfree, born in the 1790s and grew up speaking Dutch in Ulster County,
New York. She had to escape enslavement in 1826 and waged a long fight to
get her children free. She became a follower of the self-described Prophet
Robert Matthews. She resettled in New York City in 1843 and adopted the
name "Sojourner Truth" and became one of the most prominent black
abolitionists-. After the war, she went on on to demand that the post-war
American Equal Rights Association support the civic equality of women.
