California Sues Exxon Over Plastics Pollution and Recycling ‘Myth’ The lawsuit, seeking ‘multiple billions of dollars,’ opens a new front in the legal battles with oil and gas companies over climate and environmental issues. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/23/climate/california-exxon-mobil-plastics-pollution-recycling-lawsuit.html?unlocked_article_code=1.NE4.zKIn.mFxO3U7SsSjJ&smid=em-share 'Exxon Mobil responded sharply, saying California officials knew for decades that their recycling system was ineffective. “They failed to act, and now they seek to blame others,” the company said in a statement. “Instead of suing us, they could have worked with us to fix the problem and keep plastic out of landfills.”' Across the US, and the world, taxpayers' infrastructures haven't kept pace with the toxic waste generated by Exxon/Mobile and other big corporations, perhaps most of them. Mainstream economists call that an "externality," which increases corporate profit by pushing the costs of their product onto communities. That's like another article carried in the for-profit press about another industry: Since the 1970s, 3M and other chemical companies polluted human populations with PFAS chemicals despite the fact that many communities mandate recycling human waste into fertilizer, which now produces toxic grazing land in the US, and I would suspect globally. There are so many reasons why people should rally in ecological class struggle against the businesses of environmental destruction, but where to start? Since accelerated climate warming is arguably the tallest pole in the tent, I would put that first, maybe even without climate and environment focus, https://x.com/PortlandDSA/status/1829664721899045093.
