You got your timeline of history confused. The Soviet Union enjoyed worldwide 
popularity during the Stalin era.

In the 1930s while unemployment swelled to as much as one quarter of the 
workforce, the Soviet Union industrialized at full employment.

In World War Two the Soviet Union earned the gratitude of the world's working 
people when it bore the brunt of Hitler's attack and defeated Nazi Germany. Not 
for nothing did the partisan fighters of France and Italy largely fight under 
communist leadership.

Working-class disappointment with the Soviet Union came with Khrushchev and 
Brezhnev.
