Thanks Michael, excellent writing, certainly one of the best things I've
seen out there, especially with the sudden sea of campist ignorance being
so confidently displayed by so many with zero knowledge of actual facts,
let alone class analysis.
You write, in relation to the more fantastic claims that Israel is behind
the rebel advance: "If Israel had any influence over the Syrian rebels, why
on earth did they not instruct them to launch their offensive long time
ago, before they had to settle for a ceasefire in Lebanon but only after?!
Why did they wait for more than one year since the beginning of the
conflict at the Lebanese-Israeli border on 7 October 2023?!"
Exactly! In fact, there is little doubt that the rebels purposefully waited
until the Lebanon ceasefire precisely so as not to be seen breaking any
transit between Iran and Lebanon across Syria while the war lasted. Ever
since last October, rebel-held Idlib has been a sea of demonstrations,
seminars, donation-drives etc for Gaza (while the Assad regime bans
pro-Palestine demonstrations). And it was difficult to wait, because ever
since last october again, the Assad regime and Russia have stepped up their
bombing of Idlib (regime shows "resistance" to Zionism by bombing
pro-Palestinian populations at the opposite end of Syria, compass always
wonky). That's why the name of this offensive was "Operation to Deter
Aggression" - the initial aim was to push back against this ongoing
aggression, but they were reluctant to wage it as long as the conflict in
Lebanon continued.
The only reason it changed from an operation to deter aggression to an
operation to liberate as much of Syria as they could was because of the
speed with which the completely hollowed-out Assad regime military
collapsed.
