A thousand days without a wage increase is a clear sign of Nicolas Maduro’s savage neoliberal adjustment
Dec. 9, 2024 The Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV) recalled that this Tuesday, December 10, marks one thousand days since the last wage increase in Venezuela, “in a context of acute economic crisis and generalized impoverishment of working families”. Neirlay Andrade, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the PCV, affirmed that this policy of freezing wages, salaries and pensions is “the clearest sign of the savage neoliberal adjustment implemented by the leadership of the government of Nicolás Maduro”. “This is a policy aimed at preserving the profits of business, the profits of capital, the profits of the parasitic bourgeoisie, at the cost of the sacrifice of the working class,” denounced Andrade in a press statement. “To the freezing of wages is added the elimination of collective bargaining agreements and the dismantling of rights and historic conquests of the working class”, she added. Andrade recalled that the National Government tries to hide its anti-labor practice “with farces such as that of the integral minimum income”. “This is nothing more than a euphemism to officially bury the salary and replace it with bonuses that have no incidence on indemnities, vacations, utilities, Christmas bonuses”, said the leader. The spokeswoman of the PCV explained that this policy “is complemented with the execution of practices of criminalization, persecution and harassment in workplaces”. Andrade recalled the cases of union leader Daniel Romero; imprisoned after leading massive protests in Guayana [east Venezuela], and of the General Secretary of the union of the lumber company Masisa, Jean Mendoza; who is facing a judicial process for demanding compliance with contractual rights.
