The US fossil fuel industry likely wants to heal the rift with Russia so they
can resume business; that was Exxon's plan in the first Trump presidency,
although the plan did not work out for a number of reasons. And I think many
neocons hold the opposite view. Recent events in Syria suggest to me that
Russia is badly overextended and will need to end the war soon. Zelensky
recently offered to give up the occupied east and Crimea in exchange for NATO
membership, and Putin countered with a proposal to keep both the occupied lands
and Ukraine out of NATO.
I think socialists should oppose Ukraine joining NATO as a matter of principle,
though the effect of this opposition would be practically meaningless. I don't
see NATO membership as an issue of self-determination but of further
imperialist incursion into Eurasia. That is, we in the NATO countries should
oppose the expansion and demand the dismantlement of NATO.

Why parse what Trump says? He issues contradictory statements, sometimes in
adjacent sentences, to undermine any notion of truth or a consensus view
reality. Trump seeks personal loyalty and devotion over facts and policy, which
don't matter much at all. He proposed banning TikTok before someone gave him a
pile of money to not ban it. Trump is coin-operated and has not been motivated
by policy or vision.
