I agree but it depends on context. When Salman Rushdie was stabbed repeatedly
in Chautauqua, New York, in 2022, he lost an eye, underwent a long recovery,
and took some time to look into the background of his assailant. He noted that
the man's journals indicated nothing but a superficial understanding of the
fatwa issued against Rushdie, a less than superficial understanding of the book
that led to the fatwa, and a hastily-organized assault after selecting Rushdie
to be his target. Rushdie speculated in an interview that this attacker, like
many, decided to kill someone and then decided who. If Rushdie's attacker
selected a healthcare executive instead, and provided a manifesto on medical
coverage rather than a reference to "Satanic Verses," should Rushdie's attacker
become a cause cèlébre of the left?
The country club scion, Luigi Mangione, planned his attack much better, to a
point, but how much different is this murder from other assassinations and
attempted assassinations of prominent people? It happens multiple times a year
in the US. Offering Mangione up as some kind of martyr is deluded, and putting
his "defense" on facebook is inviting Facebook to censor them. Given the looney
nature of the shooting, it would be hard to develop a united front defense
against FB censorship.
