On the dockworkers, John speculates, "One possibility is that there will be a
strike and USMX will hold out for a while to see if Trump really does support
the ILA. When he does, which seems most likely, USMX and Daggett will reach a
deal: Allow automation with job protection for present members."

Industry observers foresee a muddled outcome, not the complete automation that
John discusses nor a capitulation by the union:

Mr Tirschwell cited the timing of a potential strike – set to commence five
days before Mr Trump’s inauguration. He said: “They go on strike then. They’re
on strike for five days. Trump comes into office as the knight in shining
armour who tells the ocean carriers ‘there’s going to be hell to pay, unless
you agree to what the union is asking’, and he saves the day.”

The smart money plays both sides against the middle. Trump can allow the ILA to
walk out for a week or less — that’s when ships really begin to queue up — then
swoop in to help hammer out an agreement under which the union accepts a
watered-down proposal to test automation in exchange for the pledge to create
more jobs. Trump gets a win, box handling continues, and longtime ILA President
Harold Daggett gets a going-away gift as he hands over the union reins to his
son.

This outcome is consistent with Trump's demagogy when it comes to workers.
Regarding auto workers, I recalled at the beginning of Trump's first term in
the White House:

Early in his presidential run, August, 12, 2015, Trump revealed the “art of the
deal” as he would apply it to outsourcing. He said U.S. automakers should move
production from Michigan. “You can go to different parts of the United States
and then ultimately you’d do full-circle – you’ll come back to Michigan because
those guys are going to want their jobs back even if it is less.” After
Michigan “loses a couple of plants – all of sudden you’ll make good deals in
your own area … We can do the rotation in the United States – it doesn’t have
to be in Mexico.” (emphasis added)
