Beijing also just verified 'full member' not partner status: https://www.mfa.gov.cn/eng/xw/fyrbt/202501/t20250106_11527794.html

Very opaque, this expansion process:

 * first, of entry to the BRICS as a new 'full member' invitee in
August 2023 (Joburg summit) - but of course that doesn't mean
membership in the BRICS New Development Bank, as Ethiopia showed by
defaulting on foreign debt a few days before it joined a year ago
and hence not getting NDB access; and
 * second, in October 2024 (Kazan summit) due to the difficulty of
digesting unruly new members (e.g. Egypt and Ethiopia which tried to
sabotage South Africa's chance to be a Jim-Crow permanent member of
   the UN in September 2024).

Doesn't matter much in the whole scheme of things, I suspect, as this club goes through various ebbs and flows. For mainly symbolic reasons, the two key prizes - Saudi Arabia and Turkiye - remain elusive.
