I do not know anyone else on this list, so I am not part of a ‘circle of friends’.
Kristen is right to highlight the extreme horror of these events. Apart from news reports, this was well illustrated by the award winning 2017 TV drama ‘Three Girls’ which showed the failings of the local police, social work and local politicians. From everything that has been published the grooming or rape gangs does seem to be a specific form of sexual abuse prevalent from those of a Pakistani background. The issue is not only the policy issue of a sensitivity within the leadership official bodies towards communal relations but the contempt towards young working class white girls by individuals and organizations based on gender prejudices around consent and sexual behavior, prejudices more related to class and gender than cultural heritage. However, the solution to this has not been ignored by national politicians although they may have lacked urgency in some cases, so it is not the primary fault of the central government, despite Kristen’s assertions. What I find it difficult to accept is the promotion of sources, like GB News or The Telegraph, as innocent searchers after the truth when we have been in the midst of the exploitation of Islamophobia ever since 2001 by those on the right of the political spectrum. I would accept that both reports when they are reporting, as opposed to their opinions do illustrate the horror of what has happened. These individuals and bodies have a clear and objectionable political agenda in the manner in which they have been pursuing this issue. Anyone on the left to accepts the term political correctness at face value deserves my contempt as this is a part of the culture wars pursued by the right, since at least, 2001. Anyone would be far better to follow the judgements of someone like Nazir Afzal ( https://x.com/nazirafzal ) who approved of and was engaged in the prosecution the Rochdale grooming gang on which the Three Girls drama was based.
