(Aficionados will recognize that Forbes was inadvertently doing news reportage on a large section of the Trump base and alt-right. His account begins in 2013 with a particularly grotesque instance of anti-Black racism targeting a popular author of high repute. Known bizarrely as the "Sad Puppies" scandals, this was the initial online mobilization of the Trump base around explicitly-racist propaganda in a manner outshining even the "closet-case racism" of Ron Paul during the 2012 Presidential primaries. In terms of genre studies, once can argue about whether Rip Van Winkle's time traveling is science fiction (even though the same device is repeatedly used today in contemporary sci-fi without dispute), but the deeper argument should be about how that nostalgic paean to 1776 valorizes a 'left wing white nationalist' sentiment uncritically that may very well have been perpetuated across the genre unhindered.
