In his quest to show demonstrate that Lenin's inter-imperialist rivalry best describes contemporary international relations, notably between the US and China, Charlie (probably unknowingly) keeps demonstrating how it does not. Chinese corporations also range overseas to exploit labour and resources in a global capitalist economy dominated by US transnationals , but the PRC has not occupied and annexed the Congo in order to secure an exclusive monopoly over its resources as Belgium savagely did more than a century ago. Nor could it without risking a nuclear confrontation with the US which it seeks to avoid. The US likewise does not directly occupy and adminster overseas territories, relying instead on its control of international credit and payments and other forms of economic coercion rather than gunboat diplomacy to maintain its informal global empire. Charlie will next point to China's claims to Taiwan and its harassment of Filipino fishing boats in the South China Sea as evidence of its imperial ambitions comparable to the US's vast global network of military bases in allied and proxy states far from American shores. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
