First, the island sustained an indigenous population thousands of years prior to its colonization by Portuguese, Chinese, and Dutch expeditions. The large-scale influx of Han people began under the Dutch in the late 17th century. I think, but not certain that prior to (?)1940(?) the CPC advocated self-determination for Taiwan. Regardless, the app 70% of the population whose roots preceded the arrival of the KMT in exile, have long struggled for self-determination. As for all of Asia cheering when Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japanese, clearly that "all" doesn't include the Chinese people themselves, battling for years against Japanese imperialism.
