After ICE killed Renée Nicole Good in Minneapolis, many of us rightly called it what it was: state violence and murder. A militarized enforcement apparatus took a life and then hid behind the familiar language of “security” and “order.” But if Renée’s murder horrifies you here, then you cannot turn around and excuse — or actively defend — a state like Iran, where that same logic of repression is deployed daily, systematically, and on a far larger scale against protesters, workers, women, and LGBTQ+ people. What happened to Renée is being multiplied thousands of times over within Iran as we speak. Protesters are beaten, imprisoned, disappeared, and killed. Queer people face state-sanctioned persecution and execution. Women there are considered property of men. A fascistic police apparatus enforces ideological conformity through terror. To defend that system while chanting “abolish the police” at home is not solidarity with the oppressed — it is solidarity with power. Why we oppose Trump, why we oppose creeping fascism, why we oppose state violence, why we oppose the gestapo-like ICE, is precisely to prevent what Iran has become from taking root here at home. I have observed numerous instances of so-called leftists eager to lick the boots of Iran's theocratic fascistic police state apparatus purely on the basis that they are the chief geopolitical rival of genocidal Israel. Progressive politics mean nothing if they stop at borders or collapse when the oppressor wears the “right” geopolitical colors. If you oppose ICE, militarized policing, and state violence in Minneapolis, you are obligated — morally and politically — to oppose them in Tehran. Anything less is not solidarity with worldwide emancipatory politics; it is hypocrisy plain and simple. Justice isn’t selective. Oppression isn’t negotiable. If you speak out against state violence, inequality, and dehumanization in the U.S., then you have to speak out against it everywhere. Stand with the oppressed, not with oppressors — period. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
