"Thousands of political prisoners were executed in the early years of the
Islamic Republic, and that level of brutality quickly became normalized.
Arrests, torture, assassination, and, in some cases execution continue to
this day. The Shah built Evin Prison; the Islamic Republic expanded it.
Evin became the nightmare. of political prisoners both before and after the
revolution."
