To finish the story from the previous post - In 1928, Diego Rivera painted a mural called The Arsenal. In it are both Melle and Modotti. She is looking up at her new lover and comrade while passing out ammunition. Behind them is Vidali, who will murder Melle the following year. The assassin looks out at viewers with a cold stare. Very creepy and prophetic.
In 1930 Modotti was exiled from Mexico. She was originally from Italy. In 1937 she was with Dr. Norman Bethune in Spain during the disasterous retreat from Màlaga. In 1939 she returned to Mexico under a pseudonym. In 1942 she died at the age of 45 under what some thought were suspicious circumstances. After hearing of her death, Rivera suggested Vidali had orchestrated it. Modotti may have 'known to much' about Vidali's activities in Spain which included a rumoured 400 executions. Modotti's grave is located in the Panteon de Dolores in Mexico City.
