Avi's grandfather David Lewis and his father Stephen Lewis were both staunch social democrats and pillars of the NDP establishment. Both were instrumental in the purge of the left social democratic Waffle from the NDP in the early 70’s - David as leader of the national party and son Stephen as head of the Ontario New Democrats. As national secretary of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), the NDP’s predecessor, the elder Lewis helped the social democratic wing of the trade union movement to purge Communists from the ranks at the height of the red scare.
