THE UKRAINE SOLIDARITY NETWORK (U.S.) expresses its solidarity with the latest
mass uprising in Iran, which has been brutally crushed by the Islamic Republic,
even as the reactionary forces of monarchy and another U.S. and Israeli
military assault threaten to hijack the Iranian people’s struggle against
religious fundamentalism and authoritarianism.

As the Ukrainian democratic socialist organization Sotsialnyi Rukh (Social
Movement) has stated (
https://rev.org.ua/iran-na-mezhi-socialnij-vibux-proti-teokrati%d1%97-bidnosti-ta-represij/
) : “ The events in Iran will have a significant impact on the whole world and
our country in particular. While Putin’s Russia is using Iranian drones, among
other things, to terrorize the population of Ukraine and attack civilian
infrastructure with genocidal intentions to put millions of people at risk of
freezing without heating and electricity, the sympathies of ordinary Iranian
women and men are on the side of the victims.”

The threats by the Trump administration and Israel to intervene militarily for
the second time since June 2025 will only strengthen the repressive hand of the
Iranian theocratic capitalist oligarchy.  It will allow the Iranian regime to
tar all resistance as agents of these foreign powers, and to threaten military
retaliation and wider war against both Israel and the Gulf monarchies.

The uprising, which emerged from late December 2025 to mid-January 2026,
involved people of all classes, genders, ages, nationalities, and religions.
It took place in all 31 provinces of Iran. Although negative and monarchist
slogans against the regime were prominent, and protest slogans did not have the
democratic social content of the 2022 Woman, Life, Freedom movement,
participants included many progressives and opponents of both monarchy and
imperialist intervention. It has been confirmed (
https://www.en-hrana.org/day-41-of-the-protests-new-domestic-and-international-reactions-to-the-protests-and-the-continued-arrests/
) that the Iranian regime has killed at least 6,900 people in the course of
two weeks and arrested approximately 50,000.  It has also shot people in the
eyes, neck, torso with military-grade weapons. More opponents of the regime
continue to be arrested (
https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2026/01/iran-authorities-unleash-heavily-militarized-clampdown-to-hide-protest-massacres/
) and executed.  Internet access which was almost completely shut down during
the uprising remains limited.

The Iranian government tries to discredit Iranian people’s protests by labeling
all protesters as “terrorists,” monarchists, or U.S./Israeli spies. The Russian
government also continues to attack the struggle of the Ukrainian people
against Russia’s imperialist war as a “proxy war” led by “fascists.”

It is time for Iranian and Ukrainian progressives to come together in
solidarity and find ways to help each other on the basis of allegiance to human
rights and democratic principles.

Those Iranians in exile who can speak out without the threat of repression can
try to dispel Russian disinformation about the nature of the Ukrainian struggle
for self-determination against Russian imperialism.  They can issue statements
to oppose the Iranian government’s sale of drones and missiles to Russia.

Ukrainian progressives have tried to inform Ukrainians about progressive
struggles in Iran (
https://femwork.org/en/fm-news/solidarity-with-iranian-women-eng/ ) such as the
Woman, Life, Freedom Movement that arose in 2022.

Social Movement and the Commons Journal have also published articles to inform
their readers about the long history of Russian colonialism and imperialism in
Iran and about why the 1979 Iranian Revolution against monarchy turned into a
religious fundamentalist counter-revolution.

The Ukraine Solidarity Network (U.S.) takes a strong stand against the Islamic
Republic, monarchist forces, and U.S. and Israeli military intervention in
Iran.  A Trump administration that is deporting hundreds of thousands of
immigrants, putting people in concentration camps, killing innocent protesters
on the streets and calling them “terrorists” cannot liberate the Iranian
people. The Israeli government of Netanyahu which is responsible for the mass
slaughter of over 73,000 Palestinians in Gaza cannot bring liberation to the
Iranian people. Trump and his Putin-admiring gang have only begun to show their
capacity for promoting brutality against innocent protesters in the United
States.

The path to a democratic alternative for the Iranian people requires a
principled opposition to all authoritarian and imperialist forces, and
recognition of the rights of women and all oppressed national, religious, and
sexual minorities. It also requires international solidarity with peoples
directly affected by the Iranian government’s military interventions, beginning
with Ukrainians, Syrians, and Palestinians.
