I said I had never known of a prominent social democratic or Communist intellectual, trade union leader or politician vying for influence and/or power who hadn't been forced to adapt to mass reformist and ruling class pressures. Reg Birch and the CPGB-ML never got close enough to follow suit. Those who did had often also been intransigent rank-and-file militants.
